Pneumonia Vaccine for Young Children A study reported by Griffin et al. compared the rate of pneumonia between 1997 and 1999 before pneumonia vaccine (PCV7) was introduced and between 2007 and 2009 after pneumonia vaccine was introduced. Read the excerpts from the abstract, and answer the question that follows it. (Source: Griffin et al., “U.S. hospitalizations for pneumonia after a decade of pneumococcal vaccination,” New England Journal of Medicine, vol. 369 [July 11, 201]: 155-163)
We estimated annual rates of hospitalization for pneumonia from any cause using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample database. . . . Average annual rates of pneumoniarelated hospitalizations from 1997 through 1999 (before the introduction of PCV7) and from 2007 through 2009 (well after its introduction) were used to estimate annual declines in hospitalizations due to pneumonia.
The annual rate of hospitalization for pneumonia among children younger than 2 years of age declined by 551.1 per 100,000 children . . . which translates to 47,000 fewer hospitalizations annually than expected on the basis of the rates before PCV7 was introduced.
Results for other age groups were similar. Does this show that pneumonia vaccine caused the decrease in pneumonia that occurred? Explain.

- What does the y -intercept on the graph of a logistic equation correspond to for a population modeled by that equation?arrow_forwardHoaglin, Mosteller, and Tukey (1983) presented data on blood levels of beta-endorphin as a function of stress. They took beta-endorphin levels for 19 patients 12 hours before surgery and again 10 minutes before surgery. The data are presented below, in fmol/ml Based on these data, what effect does increased stressed have on endorphin levels. include: the hypotheses tested (H0 and H1), the test-statistic and its df, the p-value of the test, and the conclusion as it relates to the research question. TBI is caused by impacts to the head that might occurduring contact sports, motor vehicle accidents, and similar events. TBI is known to produce cognitive impairments and reductions in brain volume. In a recent, repeated-measures study on TBI, Zagorchev et al.(2016) observed that the size of the amygdala among mild TBI patients was reduced at 12 months after injury, relative to two months after injury. Suppose that a researcher is interested in replicating and extending this observation. She recruits n=8 participants with mild TBI and records the volume of a brain region at 2 months and again and again at 12 months. Her data are listed below a.) Test the hypothesis that volume of the brain region changed between 2 & 12 months. Use α=0.05, two-tailed b.)
