Secondhand Smoke Exposure and Young Children Researchers wanted to assess whether a theory-based, community health worker-delivered intervention for household smokers will lead to reduced secondhand smoke exposure to children in Chinese families. Smoking parents or caregivers who had a child aged 5 years or younger at home were randomly assigned to the intervention group that received information on smoking hygiene and the effects of secondhand smoke exposure delivered by community health workers or to the comparison group who received no additional information regarding secondhand smoke. At a 6-month follow-up, researchers assessed whether or not families had adopted any smoking restrictions at home. The results are shown in the following table. (Source: Abdullah et al., “Secondhand smoke exposure reduction intervention in Chinese households of young children: A randomized controlled trial,” Academic Pediatrics, vol. 15 (November-December 2015): 588-598, https://doi.org/10.1016/j. acap.2015.06.008)
a. What percentage of those receiving the intervention adopted smoking restrictions at home?
b. What percentage of those in the control group adopted smoking restrictions at home?
c. Based on this data, do you think the intervention may have been effective in promoting the adoption of smoking restrictions in the home?

As part of a long-term study of individuals 65 years of age or older, doctors at the Seattle Grace Medical Center in Washington state investigated the relationship between state of residence and depression. A sample of 60 individuals, all in reasonably good health, was selected; 20 individuals were residents of Texas, 20 were residents of Washington state, and 20 were residents of South Carolina. Each of the individuals sampled was given a standardized test to measure depression. The data collected follow; higher test scores indicate higher levels of depression. These data are contained in the attached data file SeattleGrace1. A second part of the study considered the relationship between state of residence and depression for individuals 65 years of age or older who had a chronic health condition such as diabetes and/or high blood pressure. A sample of 60 individuals with such conditions was identified. Again, 20 were residents of Texas, 20 were residents…arrow_forward

The researchers used these data to determine if there was evidence to support the claim that the mean pain rating is lower for patients who receive the laser treatment. Answer the four key questions. To test this theory, researchers collected a representative sample of 527 rainbow trout and 459 brown trout. Of the 527 rainbow trout collected, 120 had developed whirling disease; of the 459 brown trout collected, 74 had developed whirling disease Calculate the relative risk of whirling disease for rainbow trout compared to brown trout in this sample.arrow_forward
- Do less agreeable Facebook users tend to spend more time on Facebook? A study (Ivcevic and Ambady, 2013) aimed to investigate various facets of use of the social networking website Facebook. Previous research suggested that individuals with poorer face-to-face social skills may find internet-based social platforms less daunting, so as part of the study Ivcevic and Ambady investigated whether an individual's volume of Facebook use was associated with levels of "agreeableness". The subjects were 99 university students who all had a Facebook page. The subjects agreed to allowing the content of their Facebook pages to be downloaded on six separate occasions over a three-week period. As part of the data gathered on each subject, each of the 99 were individually rated by a selected friend on an "agreeableness" scale (based on average ratings on a questionnaire where all responses were on a Likert scale), with 1 being "low" and 5 "high". We consider here the relationship between "friend…arrow_forwardDo less agreeable Facebook users tend to spend more time on Facebook?
