Summary Introduction

Introduction:

Hemoglobin refers to an iron consisting oxygen-carrying metalloprotein present in the RBCs (red blood cells) of almost all the vertebrate and some invertebrates. This is responsible for carrying the O2 (oxygen) from the lungs to the rest of the parts of the body. In tissues, it releases the oxygen, which allows the aerobic respiration to occur in order to supply energy to power the functions of the organism and this process is known as metabolism.

Which of the following does not happen at the O₂ binding site of hemoglobin (Hb)? 1) Movement of the metal co-factor II) Protonation of the proximal His III) The spin state change of the Fe2+ ion IV) Change of shape of the protoporphyrin IX ring OI ON O III Oll
Consider this figure, which shows oxygen binding to hemoglobin under various conditions 1.0 В A 0.5- pO2 a) If B is normal hemoglobin what could lead to curve hemoglobin A. b) If B is normal hemoglobin what could lead to curve hemoglobin C. c) Which curve shows the hemoglobin with the highest O2 affinity? d) Which curve shows the hemoglobin with the lowest P50? (Saturation)
1. a) True or False - A mutation in the beta globin gene that causes conversion of His146 to Glutamate would decrease Hemoglobin’s O2 binding affinity. b) True or False - A mutation in the beta globin gene that causes conversion of His146 to Glutamate would eliminate Hemoglobin’s positive cooperativity.
