Concept Introduction:
The boiling point of a substance is the temperature at which the vapour pressure of that substance becomes equal to the surrounding pressure. At the boiling point, the substance changes its state from liquid to vapour. The boiling point depends on the intermolecular forces present between the molecules of the liquid. The more the intermolecular forces present, the higher is the boiling point of the liquid. There are three types of intermolecular force present in liquid; named as: (a) London dispersion force (b) dipole-dipole force, and (c) hydrogen bonding force. The molecule which can form two hydrogen bonds simultaneously will have a very high boiling point.

- The vapor pressure of ethanol, C2H5OH, at 50.0 C is 233 mmHg, and its normal boiling point at 1 atm is 78.3 C. Calculate the vapH of ethanol.arrow_forward8.51 Suppose that three unknown pure substances are liquids at room temperature. You determine that the boiling point of substance A is 53°C, that of substance B is 117°C, and that of substance C is 77°C. Based on this information, rank the three substances in order of their vapor pressures at room temperature.arrow_forwardThe compounds ethanol (C2H5OH) and dimethyl ether (CH3OCH3) have the same molecular formula. Which is expected to have the higher surface tension? Why?arrow_forward
