Answer to Problem 1RQ

Globally, thunderstorms occur the year-round in tropical regions and in mid-latitude during the warmer months due to the presence of warm air, abundant moisture, and instability.

Explanation of Solution

At a given time, about 2000 thunderstorms occurred globally. Almost 45,000 thunderstorms occurs in a day and more than 16 million occurs around the world annually. Thunderstorms most commonly occur in areas where warm air, abundant moisture, and instability exist. Hence, thunderstorms occur in many tropical areas the year-round. These storms highly become warm-season phenomena in the middle latitudes and they become less common in areas that are farther from the equator.
