Describe the three major categories of rock and the principal means by which each is formed. Give an example of each.

To determine

The three major rock categories and the principle means by which each is formed and its examples.

Explanation

Igneous rocks form when the molten rock material cools and solidifies. The molten rock materials beneath the Earth’s surface is called magma and the molten rock materials that erupted out from volcanic vent is called lava.

Igneous rocks are classified as two because they are extrusive and intrusive. The extrusive igneous rocks form when the lava cools and solidifies at the Earth’s surface, whereas magma which cools and solidifies beneath the Earth’s surface is called intrusive igneous rocks.

Sedimentary rocks are formed from sediments. The sedimentary materials accumulate in horizontal layers. The materials depositing over one deposit insert pressure over the overlying sediment make them compacted. The compaction reduces the number of pore spaces in it. The process of compaction and cementation makes the sediments into solid.

Sedimentary rocks are further divided into three categories; they are clastic, organic and chemical...
