Explanation of Solution

The word cancer has a broad category and thus, restricting it to a particular definition is challenging. However, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) has defined cancer as “diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control and are able to invade other tissues”.

The general features of cancer are:

  • It occurs due to abnormalities in the cell cycle control system.
  • Cancer cells undergo several genetic and epigenetic alterations.
  • It causes uncontrolled proliferation of cells that do not stop dividing on depletion of growth factors.

Cancer arises due to multiple reasons. It may be internal or external. Lifestyle behavior, genetic factors, dietary factors, environmental factors, and occupational exposure contribute to the development of cancer.
