Exercise 5-12 deal with data from the U.S. Bureau of the Census on populations of major cities. These data allow us to find how fast the population is growing and when it will reach certain levels. Such calculations are very important, because they indicate the future needs of the population for goods and services and how well the area can support the population.
a. Develop the model that represents the population of Chicago (see Exercise 5).

- What is a carrying capacity? What kind of model has a carrying capacity built into its formula? Why does this make sense?arrow_forwardSection 3.2 (35) Six years ago, I invested some money in Dracubunny Toy Co. stock, acting on the advice of a “friend.” As things turned out, the value of the stock decreased by 5% every 4 months, and I discovered yesterday (to my horror) that my investment was worth only $297.91. How much did I originally invest?arrow_forwardGasoline Since clean-air regulations have dictated theuse of unleaded gasoline, the supply of leaded gas inNew York state has diminished. The table below wasgiven on the August 2001 New York State Math B exam,a statewide achievement test for high school students.a) Create a linear model and predict the number ofgallons that will be available in 2005.b) The exam then asked students to estimate the yearwhen leaded gasoline will first become unavailable, expecting them to use the model from part a to answerthe question. Explain why that method is incorrect.c) Create a model that would be appropriate for that task, and make the estimate.d) The “wrong” answer from the other model is fairlyaccurate in this case. Why? Based on the answer to part (a), at approximately what rate is consumer credit growing per year? The consumer credit is growing about $ billion per year. (Round to two decimal places as needed.) Part 3 c. Use the result from part (a) to predict the amount of consumer credit in the year 2016 The amount of consumer credit in the year 2016 will be $ billion. (Round to the nearest whole number.) Part 4 d. If this trend continues linearly, in what year will the total debt first exceed $4000 billion? Part 5 e. Find and interpret the correlation coefficient.
