Chapter 10.2, Problem 1CC
Summary Introduction

To understand: The process of carbon dioxide molecules in photosynthesis reaching the chloroplast of leaves.

Introduction:

Photosynthetic cells are essential to the production of complex organic chemicals used by most living things for energy. Green plant cells, phytoplankton, and cyanobacterial cells are all examples of photosynthetic cells. Photosynthesis is the process by which cells convert CO2 in the presence of sunlight into sugar molecules and oxygen. The photosynthetic cell uses these simple sugars as building blocks to produce glucose and more complex compounds. Then, cells employ glucose and oxygen for the synthesis of energy-rich carrier molecules like ATP (adenosine triphosphate), while producing carbon dioxide as a waste product through respiration activities.

MAKE CONNECTIONS Can plants use the sugar they produce during photosynthesis to directly power the work ofthe cell? Explain. (See Figures 8.10, 8.11, and 9.6.).
MAKE CONNECTIONS Explain how nitrogen andphosphorus, the nutrients that most often limit primaryproduction, are necessary for the Calvin cycle to functionin photosynthesis (see Concept 10.3).
Describe how the structure of the mitochondria OR the chloroplast aids in function. 12. Why do the chlorophyll a molecules in photosystem II have an optimal absorbance of light at 680 nm, while the chlorophyll a molecules in photosystem I have an optimal absorbance of light at 700 nm? What does this tell you about the transfer of energy between these two photosystems during the light reactions?
