Sexually transmitted disease or STD is a type of infectious disease which is transmitted from one infected person to another by sexual intercourse, affected needles, semen, blood transfusion, and so on. The examples of some STDs are HIV, gonorrhea, syphilis and so on. These STDs may be caused by bacteria, virus, yeast, and protozoa. The sexually transmitted diseases are also known as venereal disease.

The human immunodeficiency virus is a lentivirus which is a causative agent of HIV/AIDS. This virus has RNA as a genetic material which shows a rapid rate of mutation. Syncytia formation is also a virulence factor associated with the causative agent.
