To explain and discuss : The types of hospitals and patterns followed in heath industry. Introduction: Health care service refers to the various services offered by a health care industry such as ambulance service, long-term care service etc. It is a major sector that includes sub sectors including medical equipment and supplies facilities, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. The different types of hospitals are: On the basis of facilities: General acute care hospitals Specialty services hospitals On the basis of size: Rural hospitals Teaching hospitals On the basis of ownership: Government hospitals Private not-for-profit Investor owned Hospitals are a place where therapeutic and diagnostic treatments are provided to the patients. Hospitals can be differentiated from one another on the basis of facilities offered by them, their size and on the basis of ownership Hospitals on the basis of facilities provided by them are further divided into General acute care hospitals and Specialty hospitals. General acute care hospitals provide surgical, medical and acute services and are very large in size with a minimum of 1000 beds. Specialty hospitals as the name suggest provide special services such as rehabilitation services, cancer services, psychiatric services etc and are small in size. Hospitals on the basis of size are further divided into rural and teaching hospitals. Rural hospitals are small in size and are located in rural areas where as teaching hospital are very large in size and provide a wide range of services. Hospitals on the basis of ownership are further divided into Government hospitals, private not-for-profit and investor owned. Government hospitals are owned by the government and are further divided into federal and non-federal hospitals. Federal hospitals belong to special population such as military, veterans etc. and non federal hospitals belongs to the public. The public hospitals are being converted into private non-profit hospitals because of the inability of local government to provide the funds. Investors owned hospitals are the hospitals whose owners are its shareholders working with the motive of earning profit. The hospital industry is growing at a huge pace. The trends that are being followed by the hospital industry is to become sustainable, have a global perspective and finding balance with the ever growing demand.
