Question
Chapter 11, Problem 1CQ
To determine
The energy transfers and transformations that take place while rubbing hands.
Expert Solution & Answer
Answer to Problem 1CQ
The temperature of hands increases and mechanical energy is converted into heat energy when one hand is rubbed against another vigorously.
Explanation of Solution
When one hand is rubbed against another vigorously, then, due to the movement of one surface against other some loss of kinetic energy will take place. Due to the friction between the surfaces of two hands, the energy is degenerated in the form of heat which causes the loss of kinetic energy. The mechanical energy of the hands is transformed into the heat energy due to which the temperature of the hands is increased and they become warmer.
