To define: The terms acid, base, and pH.
Introduction: An ion is any atom that has a net electrical charge. Ions are formed by the loss or gain of one or more electrons. The hydrogen ion is formed by the loss of electron.
Explanation of Solution
Acid: An acid is a molecule that releases the hydrogen ions and thus increases the concentration of a hydrogen ion of a solution above that of pure water.
Base: A base is a molecule that readily combines with the hydrogen ions, which would, decreases the concentration of hydrogen ions of a solution.
pH: pH stands for the potential of hydrogen. It can be determined by the concentration of H+ ions present in the medium. The concentration of hydrogen ions in body fluids is expressed in pH units. It specifies the acidity or alkalinity of a medium. The pH unit on a scale runs from 0 to 14.
