A patient has been told that the back pain he is experiencing is due to an inflamed longissimus thoracis muscle. He asks you what that means. How would you explain the diagnosis to him?
A. Jeff was trying to toning his abdomen. However, he over-exerted himself and started to feel severe pain whenever he twisted his trunk (from left to right). If he simply did the sit-up without twisting his trunk, he did not feel the same degree of pain. Explain which muscle was damaged, and briefly explain why.
B. When you open your mouth (such as when saying Ahh… at a physical exam ), which muscles are contracting, and which muscles are relaxing? How about when you are clenching your teeth or biting hard into a nut, which muscles are contracting, and which muscles are relaxing?
Jason is a 21-year-old university student presenting with pain in the back of his right thigh. The pain
started yesterday during soccer game. Jason went to kick the ball and felt an immediate 'pull' in the
back of his right upper thigh. He had to limp off the field and reported mild pain in his right
hamstring muscles with most active movements involving knee flexion and extension. Jason can still
walk around without too much discomfort.
b) Suggest what type of injury Jason has sustained and discuss what structures are typically damaged
in muscle strain?
