The Mud Hills had a distinct eruptive character and its eruptions were more explosive and older than that of the Capulin volcano. The eruptive products of the Mud Hill consisted of less lava and more pyroclasts.

The high explosiveness of Mud Hills was because of the gases generated from the heating of groundwater. The type of eruption is called the phreatomagmatic eruption where the groundwater bursts into steam, expanding massively, and then, gets exploded. In such an event, the magma gets fragmented into pieces which include ash, lapilli, bombs, and blocks.

The pyroclasts expelled out of the Mud Hills would be scattered over the land by horizontally moving currents, fallout, and airborne trajectories...
