Question
Chapter 11.12, Problem 2MQ
Summary Introduction
The clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR) is used to protect the bacterial and archaeal genome from invading DNA due to viral infections and conjugation. The CRISPR recognizes and destroys invading foreign DNA. Therefore, the CRISPR is known as a prokaryotic immune system. In addition to viral destruction, the CRISPR serves to maintain the stability and integrity of the genome in the cell by destroying certain genes and plasmids acquired from horizontal transfers.
