Concept explainers
To determine:
The different muscles that fit in the following descriptions: The muscle that lies beside the radius and straightens the wrist, the muscle that pulls down the corners of the mouth at the time of frowning, the muscle that helps in raising the blades of the shoulders, the movement of little finger laterally away from the fourth digit due to the presence of the specific muscle and the largest muscle that is present deep into the breast.
Introduction:
The muscles present in the face of the humans are more expressive than the muscles of any other mammal. These facial muscles are inserted in the dermis and subcutaneous tissue. The different proteins that help in the movement of the muscles with the contraction and relaxation are actin and myosin.

- Select the best answer or answers from the choices given: Which of the following is a large, deep muscle that protracts the scapula during punching? (a) serratus anterior, (b) rhomboids, (c) levator scapulae, (d) subscapularis.arrow_forward(a) Name two forearm muscles that are powerful extensors and abductors of the wrist. (b) Name the sole forearm muscle that can flex the distal interphalangeal joints.arrow_forwardIdentify four muscles named for being attached to the "arm"arrow_forward
- Put the following muscles in order from lateral to medial. (a) tensor fascia late (b) pectinius (c) rectus femoris (d) iliopsoas (e) adductor longus (f) gracilisarrow_forwardFor each of the muscles below, state the criteria used for naming the muscle. For example, serratus anterior is a saw-toothed anterior muscle. 1. Latissimus dorsi 2. Rectus abdominis 3. Trapezius 4. Biceps brachii 5. Levator scapulae 6. Flexor carpi radialis 7. Piriformis 8. Gluteus medius 9. Rhomboid major 10. Pectoralis majorarrow_forwardSeveral criteria were given for the naming of muscles. Match the muscle names (column B) to the criteria (column A). Note that more than one muscle may fit the criterion in some cases Column A action of the muscle 2 shape of the muscle 3 location of the origin and/or insertion of the muscle 4 number of origins 5 location of the muscle relative to a bone or body region 6 direction in which the muscle fibers run relative to some imaginary line 7 relative size of the muscle Column B abdominis transversus biceps brachiideltoid erector spinaeexternal intercostalsflexor digitorum superficialis pectoralis majorrectus abdominisarrow_forward
- What criteria are used in naming each of the following muscles? Iliacus, adductor brevis, quadriceps femoris.arrow_forwardShelly gives her son an ice cream cone. The boy grasps the cone with his right hand, opens his mouth and begins to lick the ice cream, which muscle does he use to perform these actions.arrow_forwardWhich of the following muscle does not laterally rotate the thigh. a) obturatorius internus muscle b) gemellus inferior muscle C) Priformis muscle D) gluteus minimus muscle F) gemellus superior musclearrow_forward
- Select the best answer or answers from the choices given: Intrinsic muscles of the back that promote extension of the spine (or head) include all but (a) splenius muscles, (b) semispinalis muscles, (c) scalene muscles, (d) erector spinae.arrow_forwardIdentify a muscle that everts the foot and two muscles of either the hand or foot that are considered to be intrinsic muscles of that structure. Be sure to state clearly which muscle everts and which muscles are intrinsic.arrow_forwardSelect the two most appropriate muscle(s) that perform(s) this body movement: Temporalis Zygomaticus Masseter Sternohyoid Occipitalis Buccinatorarrow_forward
