Chapter 11.3, Problem 129E
pH The pH of a chemical solution is given by the formula
pH = −log[H+]
where [H+] is the concentration of hydrogen ions in moles per liter. Values of pH range from 0 to 14. A solution whose pH is 7 is considered neutral. The pH of pure water at 25 degrees Celsius is 7. A solution whose pH is less than 7 is considered acidic, while a solution whose pH is greater than 7 is considered basic.
- a. What is the pH of household ammonia for which [H+] is 10−12? Is ammonia basic or acidic?
- b. What is the pH of black coffee for which [H+] is 10−5? Is black coffee basic or acidic?
- c. What is the pH of lemon juice for which [H+] is 10−2? Is lemon juice basic or acidic?
- d. What is the concentration of hydrogen ions in human blood (pH = 7.4)?

- pH of Wine If the pH of a wine is too high, say, 4.0 or above, the wine becomes unstable and has a flat taste. a A certain California red wine has a pH of 3.2, and a certain Italian white wine has a pH of 2.9. Find the corresponding hydrogen ion concentrations of the two wines. b Which wine has the lower hydrogen ion concentration?arrow_forwardTemperature An object at a temperature of 80C is placed in a room at 20C . The temperature of the object is given by T=20+60e0.06m where m represents the number of minutes after the object is placed in the room. How long does it take the object to reach a temperature of 70C ?arrow_forwardDistance and time Anthony leaves Kingstown at 2:00 PM and drives to Queenville, 160 mi distant, at 45mi/h .At 2:15 PM. Helen leaves Queensville and drives to Kingstown at 40 mi/h . At what time do they pass each other on the road?arrow_forward
- Forensics At 8:30 A.M., a coroner went to the home of a person who had died during the night. In order to estimate the time of death, the coroner took the person’s temperature twice. At 9:00 A.M. the temperature was 85.7F, and at 11:00 A.M. the temperature was 82.8F. From these two temperatures, the coroner was able to determine that the time elapsed since death and the body temperature were related by the formula t=10lnT7098.670 where t is the time in hours elapsed since the person died and T is the temperature (in degrees Fahrenheit) of the person’s body. (This formula comes from a general cooling principle called Newton’s Law of Cooling. It uses the assumptions that the person had a normal body temperature of 98.6F at death and that the room temperature was a constant 70F.) Use the formula to estimate the time of death of the person.arrow_forwardpH of Saliva The pH of saliva is normally in the range of 6.4 to 7.0. However, when a person is ill, the persons saliva becomes more acidic. a When Marco is sick, he tests the pH of his saliva and finds that it is 5.5. What is the hydrogen ion concentration of his saliva? b Will the hydrogen ion concentration in Marcos saliva increase or decrease as he gets better? c After Marco recovers, he tests the pH of his saliva, and it is 6.5. Was the saliva more acidic or less acidic when he was sick?arrow_forwardThe Skydiver Again When a skydiver jumps from an airplane, her downward velocity, n feet per second, before she opens her parachute is given by = 176 1 0.834t, where t is the number of seconds that have elapsed since she jumped from the airplane. We found earlier that the terminal velocity for the skydiver is 176 feet per second. How long does it take for her to reach 90 of terminal velocity?arrow_forward
