Chapter 11.4, Problem 44E

a. In a 24 experiment, suppose two blocks are to be used, and it is decided to confound the ABCD interaction with the block effect. Which treatments should be carried out in the first block [the one containing the treatment (1)], and which treatments are allocated to the second block?

b. In an experiment to investigate niacin retention in vegetables as a function of cooking temperature (A), sieve size (B), type of processing (C), and cooking time (D), each factor was held at two levels. Two blocks were used, with the allocation of blocks as given in part (a) to confound only the ABCD interaction with blocks. Use Yates’s procedure to obtain the ANOVA table for the accompanying data.

 c. Assume that all three-way interaction effects are absent, so that the associated sums of squares can be combined to yield an estimate of σ2, and carry out all appropriate tests at level .05.

2. Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) had been considered to induce obesity in rodents and mice. In line with this, a study was conducted to determine the effect of the amount of MSG in the body-weight of mouse. A total of 14 experimental mice were used in the study. The first set of seven mice received an amount of 5 mg MSG/body-weight while the other set of seven mice received an amount of 15 mg MSG/body-weight of MSG. The initial weight of mice and weight two weeks after injection of MSG were observed. The observations are summarized in the tables below. Table 1. Weights of Mice Injected with 5 mg MSG/body-weight Amount of MSG Body-Weight Week 0 Table 2. Suppose a study investigated the effects of vitamin A, vitamin C, and omega-3 fatty acids supplements on improving eye health and vision. 300 adults volunteered to take part in the study. In the study, participants were randomly assigned to one of 3 different levels of Vitamin A (Level A, Level B, or Level C) and randomly assigned to one of 2 different levels of Vitamin C (Level 1 or Level 2) and randomly assigned to one of 2 different levels of omega-3 fatty acid (Level I or Level II). a. Identify the subjects of the study. b. Identify the factor(s) for the study and the number of treatment level(s) for each factor. c. How many different treatment groups are there in this study?
A physiologist has conducted an experiment to evaluate the effect of hormone X on sexual behavior. Ten rats were injected with hormone X and 10 other rats received a placebo injection. The number of matings was counted over a 20-minute period. The results are shown in the table below.
