Exercises 49-54 deal with sickle cell anemia, an inherited disease in which red blood cells become distorted and deprived of oxygen. Approximately 1 in every 500 African-American infants is born with the disease; only I in 160,000 white infants has the disease. A person with two sickle cell genes will have the disease, but a person with only one sickle cell gene will have a mild, nonfatal anemia called sickle cell trait. (Approximately 8%-10% of the African-American population has this trait.)

If we use s to represent a sickle cell gene and S a healthy gene, the above table shows the four possibilities for the children of two Ss parents. Each parent has only one sickle cell gene, so each has the relatively mild sickle cell trait. Find the probability that these parents give birth to a child who

- 1. Suppose that, in Example 2.27, 400 units of food A, 600 units of B, and 600 units of C are placed in the test tube each day and the data on daily food consumption by the bacteria (in units per day) are as shown in Table 2.6. How many bacteria of each strain can coexist in the test tube and consume all of the food? Despite the fact that more than 80% of the world’s population is vaccinated for it, measles remains the fifth leading cause of death worldwide. In general, the term pathogenesis refers to the way a disease originates and develops over time. In the case of measles, the virus enters through the respiratory tract and replicates there before spreading into the bloodstream and then the skin. The measles pathogenesis function used to model the development of the disease is given by the following equation: f (t) = −t (t − 21) (t + 1) Where t is measured in days and f (t) represents the number of infected cells per millilitre [mL] of plasma. What is the peak infection time for the measles virus? Solve the above problem through the following steps: (a)Expand equation f (t) = −t (t − 21) (t + 1) in fully. (b) Calculate the first derivative f′ (t), of the equation found in part (a). (c) Find the…arrow_forwardMeasles is a highly contagious infection of the respiratory system and is caused by a virus. Each offspring will receive one gene for each of the two traits from each parent, so the biologists predict that the following phenotypes should occur in a ratio of 9:3:3:1. At the a = 0.05 significance level, what can be concluded about the proposed genetic model? Because the P-value of 0.1029 > 0.05, we cannot reject the null hypothesis. We do not have convincing evidence that the distribution of eye color and wing shape is different from what the biologists predict. Because the P-value of 0.5177 > 0.05, we cannot reject the null…arrow_forwardAccording to CDC estimates, more than 2.8 million people in the United States are sickened each year with antibiotic‑resistant infections, with at least 35,000 dying as a result. Antibiotic resistance occurs when disease‑causing microbes become resistant to antibiotic drug therapy. Because this resistance is typically genetic and transferred to the next generations of microbes, it is a very serious public health problem. Of the infections considered most serious by the CDC, gonorrhea has an estimated 1.14 million new cases occurring annually, and approximately 50% of those cases are resistant to any antibiotic. Assume a health clinic in California sees 11 patients with gonorrhea in a given week. Information obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, at www.cdc.gov.
