Concept explainers
(a)
Interpretation:
The given expanded structural formula of alkane has to be converted into condensed structural formula where parentheses and subscript is used to denote the number of
Concept Introduction:
The structural representation of organic compound can be done in 2D and 3D. In two-dimensional representation, there are four types of representation in which an organic compound can be drawn. They are,
- Expanded structural formula
- Condensed structural formula
- Skeletal structural formula
- Line-angle structural formula
Structural formula which shows all the atoms in a molecule along with all the bonds that is connecting the atoms present in the molecule is known as Expanded structural formula.
Structural formula in which grouping of atoms are done and in which the central atoms along with the other atoms are connected to them are treated as group is known as Condensed structural formula.
Structural formula that shows the bonding between carbon atoms alone in the molecule ignoring the hydrogen atoms being shown explicitly is known as Skeletal structural formula.
Structural formula where a line represent carbon‑carbon bond and the carbon atom is considered to be present in each point and the end of lines is known as Line-angle structural formula.
In condensed structural formula for

- Given the Fischer projection structure of D-Lasallose below, show the step by step process of converting it to 2 possible Haworth structures and give their systematic name.arrow_forwardWhich form of lysine in Problem 18.56 is the zwitterion? What is the pI for the zwitterion?arrow_forwardA novel sugar "D-Lasallose' was isolated from a native edible mountain mushroom by a group of DLSU-D Biochemistry researchers under Sir Gids. Given the Fischer projection structure of D-Lasallose below, show the systematic conversion into the equivalent Haworth structures and give the systematic names of both anomers.arrow_forward
- Identify the selected functional groups inside of the red dotted lines.arrow_forwardFollowing are two structural formulas for (S)-serine, one of the building blocks of proteins Is (S)-serine better represented by structural formula A or B?arrow_forwardConsult Table 18.3 and draw alanine. Label the functional groups and give the three-letter abbreviation and the one-letter abbreviation. What group does the side chain fall into?arrow_forward
- Following are structural formulas for cytosine and thymine. Draw two additional tautomeric forms for cytosine and three additional tautomeric forms for thymine.arrow_forwardSuppose a polymer of glucose with alternating α(1-->4) and β(1-->4) glycosidic linkages has just been discovered. Draw a Haworth projection for a repeating tetramer (ie, two repeating dimers) of such a polysaccharide. What organism might use this as a food source?arrow_forwardWrite a structural formula for a tetrapeptide composed of phenyl-alanine, glycine, aspartic acid, and histidine in which the phenylalanine is N-terminal and the histidine is C-terminal. How many different tetrapeptides could be written that fit the criteria in this question?arrow_forward
- Draw the complete structural formula of arachidonic acid (Table 23.1) in a way that shows the cis stereochemistry of its four double bonds.arrow_forwardWhat is the Haworth projection for D-Ribulose? And L-Ribulose?arrow_forwardwhat is their structural(isomeric )relationship to each other?arrow_forward
