FIGURE 12.12 The reddish orange coloration on this boulder reveals that the rock contains iron-bearing minerals and that it has been weathered by oxidation.

What is a likely chemical formula for the reddish orange substance?

To determine

The chemical formula for the reddish orange substance in the attached figure.

Explanation

Plenty of oxygen is present in water that has regular contact with the atmosphere. When the oxygen present in the water comes in contact with certain elements in a rock forming minerals, then it can lead to the occurrence of a chemical reaction. In that reaction, the element will release its bond with the minerals and thereby leaves a substance behind with an altered chemical formula. As a result, a new bond will be established with the oxygen. This process which involves the chemical union of atoms of oxygen with another substance to form a new product is termed as oxidation. The metals such as iron and aluminium are oxidized commonly in weathering of rocks and thereby creates new products such as oxides of iron and aluminium...
