Concept explainers
A mix-up in a hospital ward caused a mother with O and MN blood types to think that a baby given to her really belonged to someone else. Tests in the hospital showed that the doubting mother was able to taste PTC (see problem 9). The baby given to her had O and MN blood types and had no reaction when the bitter PTC chemical was placed on its tongue. The mother had four other children with the following blood types and tasting abilities for PTC:
1. type A and MN blood, taster
2. type B and N blood, nontaster
3. type A and M blood, taster
4. type A and N blood, taster
Without knowing the father’s blood types and tasting ability, can you determine whether the child is really hers? (Assume that all her children have the same father.)

- Caleb has a double row of eyelashes, which he inherited from his mother as a dominant trait. His maternal grandfather is the only other relative to have the trait. Veronica, a woman with normal eyelashes, falls madly in love with Caleb, and they marry. Their first child, Polly, has normal eyelashes. Bob is a Dad. Bob has blue eyes and is right handed. His wife Barb has brown eyes and is also right handed. Their daughter Jenny has blue eyes and is left handed. - Joan was born with six toes on each foot, a dominant trait called polydactyly. Two of her five siblings and her mother, but not her father, also has extra digits. What is Joan's genotype for the number-of-digits character?arrow_forwardAlbinism is a recessive disorder where there is a lack of melanin. Andrea and her husband Claude both have normal skin pigmentation. Andrea’s mother has the albino phenotype, but her father and her brother do not (normal pigmentation). Claude’s parents are both normal, but he has a sister who has the condition (is albino). Answer the following questions If Andrea and Claude are carriers for the albino allele, what is the probability that they have an albino child? If Andrea and Claude have a second child, what is the probability this child be normal (non-albino)? A woman who has blood type A positive has a daughter who is type O positive and a son who is type B negative. Which of the following phenotypes is possible for the father?
