Concept explainers
To determine:
The ion which is involved in the development of the fast heart rate (tachycardia) and the kidney condition that causes the change in body’s electrolyte levels.
Concept introduction:
The kidney is involved in the filtration of the ions, metabolites, and other urea from the body. This organ helps in the removal of the toxic metabolites from the body. The sodium and the potassium ions are absorbed in the kidney tubules. The malfunctioning of the kidney has caused an imbalance in the electrolyte concentrations of the ions in the blood and the plasma in the body of the affected individual (Harry). This causes an increase in the rate of the heartbeat, due to the contractions of the muscles caused due to the accumulation of the potassium ions in the cells.

- Hyperkalemia is associated with the inability of the kidneys to properly filter potassium out of the blood. Which type of membrane transport do the kidneys use to filter the blood? A. Hydrostatic pressure B. Osmotic pressure C. Filtration D. A. Sodium-potassium pump B. Sodium and potassium carrier-mediated channels C. Sodium and potassium concentration gradient D. Sodium and potassium leakage channelsarrow_forward
- What are resting and active (potential) levels of sodium and potassium inside and outside of the cell?arrow_forwardSodium is an incredibly important substance in our body. You may remember from Module 1 that sodium ions play a crucial role in conducting nerve impulses during depolarization. You may also remember from Biology 20 that sodium is involved in muscle contractions. Hyponatremia is a condition where there is too little sodium in the body. This can result in difficulty processing thoughts, nausea, decreased ability to balance, seizures and coma. On the other hand, an excessive amount of sodium or hypernatremia, in the body can also lead to many different neurological problems including seizures and coma. Katrina has an excessive amount of sodium ions in her blood plasma. This is occurring despite the fact that she had been watching her salt intake and ensuring that she's drinking enough fluid throughout the day. Which hormone imbalance is causing this problem for Katrina? Explain your reasoning hormone: ___________________ reason: ______________________arrow_forwardSodium is an incredibly important substance in our body.
