To calculate: The volume of the cylinder if its slant height is 17 cm and height is 15 cm.

Expert Solution & Answer
Check Mark

Answer to Problem 6RP

The volume of cylinder is 240π .

Explanation of Solution

Given information:

Height h = 15 cm,

Slant height l =17 cm.

Formula used:

The below theorem is used:

Pythagoras theorem states that “In a right angled triangle, the square of the hypotenuse side is equal to the sum of squares of the other two sides”.

In right angle triangle,

  a2+b2c2

Volume of cylinder =B×h

B = Base area of cylinder and h = height of cylinder

Area of a circle: A=πr2

r = radius of circle

Calculation:

  Geometry For Enjoyment And Challenge, Chapter 12, Problem 6RP , additional homework tip 2

Volume of cylinder =B×h

Side BC can be calculated by applying Pythagoras Theorem.

In right angled triangle ABC , we get

  (AC)2=(AB)2+(BC)2(17)2=(15)2+(BC)2289=225+(BC)2(BC)2=289225(BC)2=64BC=64=8

d = BC = 8

  r=d2=82=4

Base area of cylinder:

  B=πr2B=π(4)2B=16π

The volume of cylinder:

  VCylinder=B×hVCylinder=16π×15VCylinder=240π
