As a fine chef Andrew Smith believes there is a market for the highest quality organic cheese. He believes that discriminating home cooks as well as chefs in fine restaurants would be willing and able to pay a premium price for such a product. He also believes that the marketplace would attach significant value to such a product based upon its origin in Pennsylvania. Tim has assembled information from the Internet about several companies that produce and sell organic cheese. He has found that some producers have taken a high volume approach and distribute their products through a national distribution network at only a slight premium in price over traditional cheese products. These cheese producers stress the organic nature of their cheese to differentiate their product. Others appear to have positioned themselves as sources of a particularly high quality product that also happens to be organic, and have priced their cheese at a significant premium.

The company recently developed an inventory control system for a national clothing manufacturer. The system gathers sales information on an hourly basis from clothing retailers nationwide. This information is then used by all departments (including the accounting, shipping, and ordering departments) to control the functions of the clothing manufacturer. Emily suspects that the inventory functions of the system are not sufficiently tested, although they have passed all their contracted (legal) tests. However, she is pressured by her employers to sign off on the software. Whilst she is only required to perform tests which have been agreed to in the original contract, her considerable experience in software testing has led her to be concerned over the quality of the system. Her employers say that they will go out of business if they do not deliver the software on time. Emily knows that if any section of…arrow_forward
- Natalie Koebel spent much of her childhood learning the art of cookie-making from her grandmother. They passed many happy hours mastering every type of cookie imaginable and later creating new recipes that were both healthy and delicious. Now at the start of her second year in college, Natalie is investigating various possibilities for starting her own business as part of the requirements of the entrepreneurship program in which she is enrolled. A long-time friend insists that Natalie has to somehow include cookies in her business plan. After a series of brainstorming sessions, Natalie settles on the idea of operating a cookie-making school. She will start on a part-time basis and offer her services in people’s homes. Now that she has started thinking about it, the possibilities seem endless. During the fall, she will concentrate on holiday cookies. She will offer individual lessons and group sessions (which will probably be more entertainment than education for the participants).…arrow_forwardThe Northwoods General Store in Vermont sells a variety of outdoor clothing items and equipment and several food products at its modern but rustic-looking retail store. Its food products include salmon and maple syrup. The store also runs a lucrative catalog operation. One of its most popular products is maple syrup, which is sold in metal half-gallon cans with a picture of the store on the front. Maple syrup was one of the first products the store produced and sold, and it continues to do so. Setting up the syrup-making equipment to produce a batch of syrup costs $450. Storing the syrup for sales throughout the year is a tricky process because the syrup must be kept in a temperature-controlled facility. The annual cost of carrying a gallon of the syrup is $15. Based on past sales data, the store has forecasted a demand of 7,500 gallons of maple syrup for the coming year. The store can produce approximately 100 gallons of syrup per day during the maple syrup season, which runs from…arrow_forwardJoe owns a plumbing business which provides emergency plumbing services to customers. - Jenco's only product is a combination fertiliser-weed killer called Fertikil. Fertikil is sold nationwide through normal marketing channels to retail nurseries and garden stores.Taylor Nursery plans to sell a similar fertiliser weed killer compound through its regional nursery chain under its own private label. Taylor does not have manufacturing facilities of its own, so it has asked Jenco (and several other companies) to submit a bid for manufacturing and delivering a 25,000 pound order of the private brand compound to Taylor. While the chemical composition of the Taylor compound differs from that of Fertikil, the manufacturing processes are very similar. The Taylor compound would be produced in 1,000 pound lots. Each lot would require 30 direct labour-hours and the following chemicals:The first three chemicals (CW–3, JX–6, and MZ–8) are all used in the production of Fertikil. BE–7 was used in another compound that Jenco discontinued several months ago. Nicolette, a self-confessed “soccer mom,” had been elected tournament director and was responsible for organizing the club’s first summer tournament. Manchester United Soccer Club (MUSC), located in Manchester, New Hampshire, was formed in 1992 as a way of bringing recreational players to a higher level of competition and preparing them for the State Olympic Development Program and/or high school teams. The club currently has 24 boys and girls (ranging in age from under 9 to 16) on teams affiliated with the New Hampshire Soccer Association and the Granite State Girls Soccer League. Doctor advises him to consume vitamin A and D regularly for a period of time so that he can regain his health. Doctor prescribes tonic X and tonic Y, which are having vitamin A, and D in certain proportion. Also advises the patient to consume at least 40 units of vitamin A and 50 units of vitamin daily. The cost of tonics X and Y and the proportion of vitamin A and D that present in X and Y are given in the table below.
