Chapter 13, Problem 10RE
Program Plan Intro

Recursion:

  • Recursion is a mechanism in which a function continuously calls itself.
  • A method which calls itself is known as recursive method.
  • Recursive method calls itself for one or more time in its body and it usually returns value of this method call.
  • The recursive method terminates, if with every recursive call, the solution of the problem is downsized and moves towards the base case. The base case is a case where the problem can be solved without further recursion.
  • Using this mechanism of recursion, some problems can be solved easily. For example, Towers of Hanoi (TOH) is one such programming exercise.
