JL, a 50-year-old woman, fell and broke the left tibia at the ankle. She is in the emergency department, waiting for the fracture to be immobilized. The leg hurts and she notes that the ankle is red and swollen. A diagnosis of a simple fracture and sprain (damage to ligaments) is made.
Describe the pathophysiology of her pain and swelling as related to both the fracture and the strain
Is 62 year old man, who was a heavy drinker and smoker, consulted his physician about feeling a strong pulse in his abdomen. He said it felt like a second heart. He also complained about pain in his abdomen, back, and groin. The physician arranged for radiographical studies, including CT scans.
radiology report The plane radiographs show calcium deposits in the wall of the abdominal aorta and an apparent aneurysm. The CT this country scans revealed an abdominal aortic aneurysm that was 11cm in diameter. Before he could be admitted to the hospital for repair of his abdominal aortic aneurysm, the patient passed out on his way home and was involved in a minor car accident. He was rushed to the hospital and admitted to surgery for repair of the ruptured aneurysm. During surgery, there was extensive mobilisation of the aorta, and several segmental arteries were ligated. Although the author was successfully repaired using a Dacron run graft, the patient was paraplegic and impotent, and his…
A 26-year-old male was returning from a neighborhood store with a six-pack of beer. He attempted to run across a busy street but was struck by a car. He was fully conscious at the scene, complaining of pain in his abdomen and left leg. Examination by paramedics revealed an open fracture of the left tibia with moderate bleeding, left upper quadrant pain with rebound tenderness, and a fast, weak pulse. The leg was immobilized, oxygen was administered, an IV started, and he was transported to the Trauma Center, approximately 10 minutes away. About 3 minutes before arriving at the Trauma Center, he suffered cardiopulmonary arrest from which he could not be resuscitated, despite vigorous advanced life support. At autopsy, his stomach was found to be full of beer, along with 4 whole wieners (without any teeth marks!). His spleen, which is normally about the size of the patient’s fist, was grossly enlarged: it measured from just under the diaphragm to the level of the umbilicus, and from the…

No neck stiffness, Kernig's sign (-), Brudzinski's sign (-), Babinski's sign (-). All joints had no swollen and tenderness. - A call to the doctor’s office from an anxious mom reports that her 8-year-old son, Billy, arrives home from school with multiple small bruises (petechiae) and a few larger bruises (ecchymosis) on his arms, legs, and trunk. These bruises were not there when he left for school, and Billy denies being hit or falling. Mom states that he has no significant medical history, and that he is not on any medications. Billy is taken immediately to the emergency room. The mother becomes increasingly anxious as she notices new bruises appearing “in front of her eyes.” Billy also appears tense as he senses some urgency and notices some concern from medical personnel beginning the assessment. Why does unexplained multiple bruising in a child or adult require prompt medical attention? How might you understand the natural concern by medical personnel as to the source of the bruises on Billy’s body? Early assessment of Billy’s vital signs and the child’s welfare indicate that Billy’s condition…arrow_forwardForamen of the Cranial BonesWrite the letter of the structure that passes through each the foramen/canal/meatus listed.1.Superiororbital fissurea. a.Supraorbital nerve (br. of CNV) and supraorbital artery 2.
