Textbook Problem

What subsurface zones does water pass through on its way to the zone of saturation? How is the zone of saturation related to groundwater and the water table?

To determine

The zones that water passes through on its way to the zone of saturation, and the way in which the zone of saturation related to the ground water and the water table.

Explanation

Any water that lies beneath the Earth’s surface is known as subsurface water. Water from precipitation or water that melts from the frozen ice soaks into ground through the process of infiltration.

Generally, in humid regions, three distinct subsurface water zones exist. The zone of aeration lies just beneath the surface. In this zone, pore spaces in the soil and rocks always contain part of air and part of water. This zone rarely saturates with water.

Although the water saturates during rainfall or melting, it is temporary.  Later, this water drains downward by the action of gravity to the lower levels...
