Question
Chapter 13, Problem 4WIO
Summary Introduction
To determine:
The reason why transitional fossils are useful for understanding evolutionary relationships and why some transitional fossils are never found.
Introduction:
Transitional fossils contain the traits between its ancient ancestors and species that came after it. For example, Pakicetus (found 50 million years ago), Aetiocetus (found 25 million years ago), and Beluga Whale (present today), they all contain similar structures of nostrils in their skull. Aetiocetus is a fossil that shows an intermediary link between these two groups, so it is a transitional fossil.
