Starbucks Coffee Co. uses a data-based approach to improving the quality and customer satisfaction of its products. When survey data located that Starbucks needed to improve the package-sealing process, an experiment was conducted to determine the factors in the bag-sealing equipment that might be affecting the ease of opening the bag without tearing the inner liner of the bag.
One factor that could affect the rating of the ability of the bag to resist was the plate gap on the bag-sealing equipment. Data were collected on 19 bags in which the plate gap was varied. The results are stored in Starbucks.
a. Construct a
b. Assuming a linear relationship, use the least-squares method of determine the regression coefficients
c. Interpret the meaning of the slope
d. Predict the mean tear rating when the plate gap is equal to 0.
e. What should you tell management of Starbucks about the relationship between the plate gap and the tear rating?

- When exposed to an infection, a person typically develops antibodies. The extent to which theantibodies respond can be measured by looking at a persons titer, which is a measure of the number of antibodies present. The higher the titer is, the more antibodies that are present. The data in Table represent the titers of 11 ill people and 11 healthy people exposed to the tularemia virus in Vermont. Is the level of titer in the ill group greater than the level of titer in the healthy group? Use the α = 0.10 level of significance.arrow_forwardA recent study on driving behavior examined whether the combination of high driving skills and low safety skills is dangerous. Participants were classified as high or low in driving skill based on responses to a driver-skill inventory, then classified as high or low in safety skill based on responses to a driver-aggression scale. An overall measure of driving risk was obtained by combining several variables such as number of accidents, tickets, tendency to speed, etc. The following data were obtained. Use a 2 x 2 ANOVA with the .05 significance level to evaluate the results. What cutoff score(s) should be used? Driving Skill Low High Safety Skill Low M1=5 M2=4.5 S1=2.7 S2=3.8 N1=6 N2=6 HIgh M3=3 M4=3.5 S3=2.9 S4=2.5 N3=6 N4=6 Group of answer choices +4.35 +3.40 +3.49 +4.26arrow_forwardA recent study on driving behavior examined whether the combination of high driving skills and low safety skills is dangerous. - Do you think the results of the study might be applicable to the whole population? Why or why not?arrow_forwardOver a nine-month period, OutdoorGearLab tested hardshell jackets designed for ice climbing, mountaineering, and backpacking. Based on the breathability, durability, versatility, features, mobility, and weight of each jacket, an overall rating ranging from 0 (lowest) to 15 (highest) was assigned to each jacket tested. The following data show the results for 10 top-of-the line jackets (OutdoorGearLab website, February 27, 2013). Answer questions 10-14. - An investigator wants to assess the association between caffeine consumption and impaired glucose tolerance, a precursor to diabetes. A study is planned to include seventy participants. Each participant will be surveyed with regard to their daily caffeine consumption. In addition, each participant will submit a blood sample which will be used to measure glucose level. Identify the type of study proposed. Briefly explain why you think the study is of this type. Indicate the study type's specific strengths and weaknesses. Could the study describe be designed as a randomized clinical trial? If so, briefly outline the study design. If not, describe the barriers.arrow_forwardIf I studied the relationship between class size and student achievement, what kind of research design would I use?arrow_forwardA major home improvement store conducted its biggest brand recognition campaign in the company’s history. A series of new television advertisements featuring well-known entertainers and sports figures were launched. A key metric for the success of television advertisements is the proportion of viewers who “like the ads a lot”. A study of 1,189 adults who viewed the ads reported that 230 indicated that they “like the ads a lot.” The percentage of a typical television advertisement receiving the “like the ads a lot” score is believed to be 22%. Company officials wanted to know if there is evidence that the series of television advertisements are less successful than the typical ad (i.e. if there is evidence that the population proportion of “like the ads a lot” for the company’s ads is less than 0.22) at a 0.01 level of significance. - Air traffic controllers often experience a high degree of on-the-job stress. In an effort to help air traffic controllers cope with their stress, the impact of a relaxation exercise program was investigated. Thirty air traffic controllers were selected from some of the busiest airports in the country and were administered a scale measuring job-related stress (the scale ranged from 10 to 50, with higher scores indicating greater stress levels). Following the stress scale, the air traffic controllers were trained in a relaxation technique for four weeks and were then administered the job-stress scale a second time.Test statistic used: Dependent Sample t-Test Requirement: State the null and alternative hypothesis.arrow_forwardA veterinarian wishes to compare the number of times race horses are reported to be lame during a 12‑month period, as compared with similar horses that are not raced. The veterinarian is particularly interested in whether the exercise schedule used in racing contributes to lameness, rather than the total amount of exercise. The veterinarian feels horses to be compared should be similar with regard to age, breed, and the number of weekly hours spent exercising. Which of the given study types should be used? Group of answer choices a. A matched design in which a race horse is chosen, and a horse that is the same age, the same breed, and exercised the same number of hours is chosen for comparison. b. A horse is chosen and raced for one year, but is not raced the next year. c. A group of race horses is chosen and then, from a nearby barn, a group of horses that do not race is chosen. d. None of the answer options are correct.arrow_forwardDo not use Minitab to answer this question.
