The midbrain is also known as the mesencephalon, which is the superior region of the brainstem. There are several major components of the midbrain. The anterior region of the midbrain is occupied by cerebral peduncles. Other components of the midbrain are susbtantia nigra, tegmentum, cerebral aqueduct, and tectum.
