Question
Chapter 14, Problem 1RQ
Summary Introduction
To determine: The value of bilateral symmetry in motile animals.
Introduction: Bilateral symmetry is a similar arrangement of anatomical parts on both sides of the organism. In this type of symmetry, the organism can be divided into two halves only by a single plane.
Expert Solution & Answer
Explanation of Solution
The bilateral symmetry is the plane of symmetry that is the characteristic feature of the motile animals. This symmetry provides the adaptive value to the motile animals as the directed movement is possible only by the presence of an elongated body consisting of a body and a tail. The structures that receive the stimuli are also present in the anterior region, which provides an advantage of adaptability to the animals.
