Concept explainers
Interpretation:
A classification of each of the compounds given below as a strong acid, strong base, weak base, amphoteric substance, or neither acid nor base has to be done.
Concept Introduction:
A strong acid must possess an ionisable proton which can be donated and its acid ionization constant should be large. A strong base must have the capacity to accept a proton and its base ionization constant should be large. Amphoteric substance can act both as an acid and a base.
The judgment of weak and strong are relative to each other which can be obtained by comparing their acid ionization constant or base ionization constant. The substance having large value of

- Write equations that show H2PO4- acting both as an acid and as a base.arrow_forwardYou are asked to determine whether an unknown white solid is acidic or basic. You also need to say whether the acid or base is weak or strong. You are given the molar mass of the solid and told that it is soluble in water. Describe an experiment that you can perform to obtain the desired characteristics of the white solid.arrow_forwardWhich of the terms weak, strong, monoprotic, diprotic, and triprotic characterize(s) each of the following acids? More than one term may apply in a given situation. a. H3PO4 b. H3PO3 c. HBr d. HC2H3O2arrow_forward
- What is the freezing point of vinegar, which is an aqueous solution of 5.00% acetic acid, HC2H3O2, by mass (d=1.006g/cm3)?arrow_forwardWhich of the following substances are acids in terms of the Arrhenius concept? Which are bases? Show the acid or base character by using chemical equations. a P4O10 b Na2O c N2H4 d H2Tearrow_forwardYou are asked for the H+ concentration in a solution of NaOH(aq). Because sodium hydroxide is a strong base, can we say there is no H+. since having H+ would imply that the solution is acidic?arrow_forward
- Which of the terms weak, strong, monoprotic, diprotic, and triprotic characterize(s) each of the following acids? More than one term may apply in a given situation. a. HC3H3O3 b. HCN c. H2SO4 d. H2SO3arrow_forwardWhat is the pH of a solution obtained by mixing 235 mL of NaOH with a pH of 11.57 and 316 mL of Sr(OH)2 with a pH of 12.09? Assume that volumes are additive.arrow_forwardYou are asked to calculate the H+ concentration in a solution of NaOH(aq). Because sodium hydroxide is a base, can we say there is no H+. since having H+ would imply that the solution is acidic?arrow_forward
