The purple sulfur bacteria acquire its color from their accessory pigments and carotenoids. These pigments are involved in the light harvesting process. They are classified under the phylum Proteobacteria. These bacteria can convert or reduce sulfate as well as other sulfur containing compounds to hydrogen sulfide (gas) therefore, they are named as purple sulfur bacteria.
