Chapter 15, Problem 15.34BE
Sustainability and capital investments (Learning Objective 1)
Jaren Industries is evaluating investing in solar panels to provide some of the electrical needs of its main office building in Phoenix, Arizona. The solar panel project would cost $500,000 and would provide cost savings in its utility bills of $70,000 per year. It is anticipated that the solar panels would have a life of 20 years and would have no residual value.
Requirements
- 1. Calculate the payback period in years for the solar panel project.
- 2. If the company uses a discount rate of 8%, what is the
net present value of this project? - 3. If the company has a rule that no projects will be undertaken that have a payback period of more than five years, would this investment be accepted? If not, what arguments could managers make to get approval for the solar panel project?
- 4. What would you do if you were in charge of approving capital investment proposals?

Useful life of project in years: 6
Annual number of extra students: 5
Annual tuition per student: $22,000
Before- tax incremental cost of a student: $2,000

The final answer is already provided. Ricardo plans to own a 1 hectare lot after 10 years for an estimated cost of P5M. To accumulate this amount, he will make equal year and deposits in a fund earning 15% compounded annually. However, at the end of the 7th year, he decided to turn it into an agricultural farm and is planning to buy seeds and other things worth P2M. What should be his deposits in the last 3 years? In today's dollars, the college estimates that it will cost $110,000 to replace old computing equipment. Due to decreasing prices on computers, it estimates that this cost will decrease each of the following years by 3%. Four levels of performance are considered feasible. The estimated probabilities of each performance level and the estimated before-tax cost savings in the first year are shown in the following table: Assume the following: • Initial capital investment: $100,000 [80% is depreciable property and the rest (20%) are costs that can be immediately expensed for tax purposes]. • The ADS under MACRS is being used. The ADS recovery period is four years. • The before-tax cost savings are estimated to increase 6% per year after the first year.• MARRAT = 12% per year; the analysis period is five years; MV5 = 0. • The effective income tax rate is 40%. On an annual basis companies allocate a certain amount of their free cash to develop projects that will facilitate company growth and earnings, which will, in turn, improve stock prices and shareholder value. Inside this process is the selection of projects that will be selected among many different available projects. Those companies that make the best choices are the ones that will successfully grow. Those that do not will join the garbage heap of companies that fail. You have that choice as the CFO of Almost Done (AD) Enterprises. Below are the specifics about a project that has been presented. Questions concerning this project follow the specifics of the project. AD, a pharmaceutical company, has developed a new drug that will supposedly cure COVID-19 and provide immunity to the general population. The results are so promising that the…arrow_forward
