Interpretation:
Fatty acids
Concept Introduction:
Fatty acid leads to formation of lipids and consists of a carboxyl group
Fatty acid consists of hydrophobic part and hydrophilic part. The nonpolar part of the chain consists of carbon and hydrogen atoms and is water repellant called hydrophobic part and the polar part that is attracted to water is called hydrophilic part. The hydrophobic part is larger than that of hydrophilic part.

- 21. Two fatty acids found in rapeseed oil are behenic acid and erucic acid. Both contain the same number (22) of carbon atoms. Behenic acid is saturated and erucic acid is monounsaturated. The abbreviated structural formula of erucic acid is CH, (CH,),CH=CH-(CH2)11COOH. (a) Deduce the abbreviated structural formula for behenic acid 4 b) Explain why the melting point of erucic acid is lower than that of behenic acid 22. A cell membrane can vary in terms of how "fluid" or "flexible" it is. Describe if you would expect each of the following changes to make a particular membrane more fluid or more rigid. Explain your choices. a) An increase in the cholesterol content b) An increase in the fraction of unsaturated fatty acyl tails in the membrane phospholipids.arrow_forwardYou are given 150 mL of an oil made up of a mixture of 3 fatty acids: palmitoleic acid (C 16:1 (n-7)) erucic acid (C 22:1 (n-9)) stearidonic acid (C 18:4 (n-3)) You know that the 150 mL sample of this oil was prepared by adding 60 mL of palmitoleic acid to 90 mL of a mixture of erucic acid and stearidonic acid. Using a hydrometer you carefully measure the density of the 150 mL sample of oil and your analysis indicates that it has a density of 0.900 g/cm3. The densities of the individual fatty acids are: palmitoleic acid = 0.894 g/cm3 erucic acid = 0.860 g/cm3 stearidonic acid = 0.9334 g/cm3 Can you determine the volumes (in mL) of erucic acid and stearidonic acid in the total volume (150 mL) of the oil mixture?arrow_forward2.
