Introduction:
In the spinal cord, there are many tracts and systems that carry information to and from the brain. Among these tracts and systems, some contain sensory neuron and some contain motor neuron. The gracile nucleus is the part of a spinal cord posterior column and is located in the medulla oblongata. This nucleus is involved in the sensation of fine touch, pressure, and proprioception associated with a lower region of the body.
The neurons found in the spinal cord are first, second, and third order neurons. The first order neuron transfers the information to the central nervous system. The second order neuron synapses on the first order neuron. In the thalamus, this neuron synapses on third order neuron. The brain’s right side obtains the information from the body’s left side, while the information from the right side of the body is received by the brain’s left side. This occurs because the axon of the first order and the second order neurons cross the central nervous system’s (CNS’s) opposite side.

- stimulation of a discrete region in a cerebral gyrus using weak electrical shocks causes twitching of the thumb. which of the following cerebral gyri is most likely involved? A) inferior frontal B) middle frontal C) precental D) postcentral E) supplemental motor areaarrow_forward(a) Make a rough drawing of the lateral aspect of the left cerebral hemisphere. (b) You may be thinking, “But I just can’t draw!” So, name the hemisphere involved with most people’s ability to draw. (c) On your drawing, locate the following areas and provide the major function of each: primary motor cortex, premotor cortex, somatosensory association cortex, primary somatosensory cortex, visual and auditory areas, prefrontal cortex, Wernicke’sand Broca’s areas.arrow_forward42 A patient comes to the physician because in church he has begun falling every time he closes his eyes while standing for prayer. He has also noted progressive difficulty walking, he lifts each foot high and stamps it forcefully on the ground with each step. He must watch his feet while walking to avoid striking doors or other obstacles with them. The disorder producing these symptoms most likely involves which of the following structures? A) Cerebellum B) Joints C) Muscles D) Motor cortex E) Posterior columnsarrow_forward
- (a) Name the brain nuclei that make up the basal nuclei (ganglia). (b) What is the basic function of the basal nuclei (ganglia)? (c) Which nucleus arches over the thalamus?arrow_forwardPeyton felt strange when she awoke one morning. She could not hold a pen in her right hand when trying to write an entry in her diary, and her muscles were noticeably weaker on the right side of her body. Additionally, her husband noticed that she was slurring her speech, so he took her to the emergency room. What does the ER physician suspect has occurred? Where in the brain might the physician suspect that abnormal activity or perhaps a lesion is located, and why?arrow_forwardAll of the following are true regarding the descending motor tracts EXCEPT which one? A. They originate in either the cerebral cortex or brainstem. B. The pathways are generally made of a two-neuron system. C. The upper motor neuron fibers target lower motor neurons of the spinal cord or cranial nerves. D. They are involved in assisting with voluntary movement.arrow_forward
