Chapter 15, Problem 2WIO
Summary Introduction

To determine:

The way in which the presence of symbiotic bacteria in amoeba Pelomyxa palustris support the endosymbiotic theory.

Introduction:

Endosymbiotic theory tries to explain the origin of organelles such as mitochondria and chloroplast. These cell organelles have separate set of DNA and according to the endosymbiotic theory these organelles have developed as a result of symbiotic relationship between two separate unicellular organisms that later combined to form a eukaryotic cell.

What role did the increase of atmospheric oxygen by prokaryotes play in the development of the endosymbiotic relationship between protoeukaryotes and mitochondria?
Endosymbiosis greatly altered eukaryotes as they acquired organelles. In the red algae shown below, the mitochondria is on left (solid lines), the chloroplast is in the middle (dotted lines), and the nucleus is on the right (dashed lines).
Although they are not photosynthetic, apicomplexan parasites such as Plasmodium have modified plastids. Describe a current hypothesis that explains this observation
