Chapter 15, Problem 33E
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

A change that occurs to molecules in the process of smelling a meal that is cooking is to be explained.

Concept Introduction:

Sensory cells, known as olfactory sensory neurons, have the ability to smell. These are present inside the nose. Separately, olfactory sensory neuron has one scent receptor.

The molecules which are diffused by the plant or animal source fit into some of these receptors but other molecules like rotten fish, fit into some other receptors due to which the unpleasant smell is experienced and like water molecules do not fit any of these receptors, hence have no smell.

Suppose a chemist synthesizes a new chemical that turns out to have an odor. Presumably, we do not have a specialized receptor for that chemical. Explain how our receptors detect it.
Name the unpleasant odor causing molecule in skunk spray. Explain why.
If the fragrance-containing balloon were heated in a microwave oven for a few moments, would the smell be more or less pronounced? Why?
