Question
Chapter 15, Problem 72E
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
The effect of a change in temperature is to be predicted for the given endothermic reaction at equilibrium.
Concept Introduction:
According to Le-Chatelier’s principle, whenever a system present at equilibrium is subjected to any physical or chemical change, the system’s equilibrium shifts itself in a direction that minimizes the factor responsible for that change.
For an endothermic reaction, increase in temperature shifts equilibrium towards the product side whereas, decrease in temperature shifts equilibrium towards the reactant side.

Carbon dioxide reacts with water to form a weak acid H2CO3 which would cause the blood pH to fall to dangerous levels if it were not promptly removed as it is excreted by the cells. This is accomplished by combining it with carbonate ion through the reaction H2CO3+CO3–2⇌2HCO3 which is forced to the right by the high local CO2 concentration within the tissues. Once the hydrogen carbonate (bicarbonate) ions reach the lung tissues where the CO2 partial pressure is much smaller, the reaction reverses and the CO2 is expelled.arrow_forward
