Concept explainers
To explain: The way in which new species can be formed by sympatric
Concept introduction: Speciation is part of evolution where new species arise from existing species as a result of evolutionary mechanisms. Sympatric speciation is a type of speciation where new species evolve in the same geographical area of their ancestral species and both the newly evolved species and the ancestral species are in the same geographical location.
To explain: The reason why it is harder for speciation to occur in sympatry than in allopatry.
Concept introduction: Speciation is part of evolution where new species arise from existing species as a result of evolutionary mechanisms. Allopatric speciation occurs when geographic isolation restricts the gene flow, whereas sympatric speciation does not occur due to geographic isolation and may be caused by certain mutation, natural or sexual selection. Sympatric speciation is a type of speciation where new species evolve in the same geographical area of their ancestral species and both the newly evolved species and the ancestral species are in the same geographical location.
