Chapter 15, Problem 7CYU
Summary Introduction
To review:
The cranial nerve that carries postganglionic nerve fibres to the target organs innervated by three nerves, namely cranial nerve III, VII, and IX.
Introduction:
The preganglionic axons are present in the oculomotor (III), facial (VII), glossopharyngeal (IX), and vagus (X) nerves. The cell bodies belonging to these preganglionic neurons can be found in motor cranial nerve nuclei within the grey matter of the brain stem. The cranial outflow of the parasympathetic division arises within the brain and provides innervation to different organs.

Meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges thatcan have severe effects on neurological function. Why isinfection of this structure potentially so dangerous?
Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord. Diagnosis involves making a “spinal tap” (lumbar puncture) and analyzing a sample of cerebrospinal fluid for signs of infection. Why analyze this fluid and not blood?
In a procedure known as a lumbar puncture (commonlyreferred to as a spinal tap), physicians use a needle to withdraw asmall amount of cerebrospinal fluid from the bottom of the spine to helpdiagnose specific illnesses. What effects might this procedure have on apatient?

The Chinese doctors thought the children had Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS), a rare paralytic condition, but Dr. McKhann wasn't convinced.
