The posterior pituitary gland comprises mainly axon terminals of the hypothalamic neurons whose cell bodies are situated in the paraventricular or supraoptic nuclei. The paraventricular neurons mainly make the oxytocin and the supraoptic neurons generate the antidiuretic hormone.
