To review:
The actions of humans as natural selectors for other species and the environmental changes, which are caused by the humans.
Introduction:
Human beings out of all the other species act as natural selectors in setting up the environment for other living. Over the years, people have caused much damage to the environment and thus created hostile living surroundings for other species. Many species became extinct because of the actions of human beings. Also, human beings by using antibiotics and excessive use of pesticides caused damage to crops and surroundings and a paved path for the generation of germs and decease, which are superior to the antibiotics. Thus, human beings are acting as the natural selectors for other species.

- Sexual selection tends to cause bigger size, more elaborate weaponry, or brighter colors in males. Is this an example of stabilizing, directional, or disruptive selection?arrow_forwardWhat are the similarities and differences between natural selection and selective breeding?arrow_forwardMany people assume that modern medicine has eliminated natural selection in humans. What are three traits that are currently under natural selection in one or more human populations? What form of selection is acting on those traits? What kinds of data show how selection is acting?arrow_forward
- Which of the following is true about natural selection? Group of answer choices it acts on individuals it typically does not involve changes in genotype frequencies in a population it involves individuals willfully changing their genotype and/or phenotype in order to become better matched to their environment and leave more offspring it is a random process it involves humans increasing the frequency of desirable traits in a species by selecting which individuals breedarrow_forwardWhat is artificial selection? Provide an example.arrow_forwardWhat is neutral evolution? A. Neutral evolution does not exist. B. When certain genes are present or absent in populations due to natural selection (they are advantageous or disadvantageous). C. When certain genes are present or absent in populations regardless of selection (they are not advantageous or disadvantageous). D. When certain genes are present or absent in populations due to sexual selection (they are selected for by the opposite sex).arrow_forward
- The domestication or breeding of animals to have as pets, livestock on farms, or for work purposes is a form of artificial selection. Charles Darwin used these practices to support his theory of species change by natural selection. How is artificial selection similar to natural selection? When animals with favorable traits are bred with animals with unfavorable traits, the offspring will have favorable traits, so breeders were changing species by removing certain traits. For artificial selection to work, only the strong survive to reproduce. By breeding animals with specific traits, breeders were able to produce a wide variety of breeds within a short period of time. Artificial selection involves breeding two different species and determining if a hybrid organism can be produced.arrow_forwardWhich of the following traits would you expect to be under weakest selection? Explain your answer. The development of prostate cancer in older male humans The development of digits in frogs The silver hair color on silver back male gorillas The dance choreography in peacock spidersarrow_forwardWhich statement is accurate about natural selection? It is a biological process that prevents species from adapting to significant changes in their environments. It is a biological process that leads a population to have a widespread expression of an advantageous trait. It is a biological process that allows a population to have a competitive advantage in many environments. It is a biological process that causes certain traits to be expressed less with each subsequent generation.arrow_forward

Disruptive Directional Stabalizingarrow_forwardWhich of the following contribute to keeping low-fitness alleles in our gene pool? Choose all that are correct Random mating Efficient selection against rare recessive disease-causing alleles New mutations Late age of onset of some diseases Inefficient selection against rare recessive disease-causing allelesarrow_forwardIs evolution by natural selection based on the desires of individuals within the evolving population? In other words, are individuals able to control natural selection to obtain a certain outcome? Explain.arrow_forward
