Chapter 15.1, Problem 84E
Exercises 81–84 are based on the classic game of Rock, Paper, Scissors. (If you’re not familiar with the game, ask someone for the rules, or look it up on Wikipedia.) Use the rules of the game to build a mathematical system. The elements are rock, paper, and scissors, and the result of the operation is which of the two elements wins the game.

In baseball, League A allows a designated hitter (DH) to bat for the pitcher, who is typically a weak hitter. In League B, the pitcher must bat. The common belief is that this results in League A teams scoring more runs. In interleague play, when League A teams visit League B teams, the League A pitcher must bat. So, if the DH does result in more runs, it would be expected that league A teams will score more runs in League A park than when visiting League B parks. To test this claim, a random sample of runs scored by league A teams with and without their DH is given in the accompanying table. Complete parts c) through d) below.
5. A high school tennis team is scheduled to play 28 matches. If the team wins 60% of the first 15 matches, how many additional matches must the team win in order to finish the season winning 75% of its scheduled matches?

- Question. The number of first-year students who were admitted and accepted for the 2022 fall semester at Pitt was 4927. Of those: 3431 were admitted to the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences, 661 were admitted to the School of Engineering, 402 were admitted to the College of Business Administration, 253 were admitted to the School of Computing and Information, 180 were admitted to the School of Nursing. Part a ) Given the size of the group of first-year students (here, we can call this the population), can we assume independence if we choose a sample of two students? Possible answer choices: No because N < 10n Yes because N > 10n Part b) If you were to choose two students at random and assume that the sampling is approximately independent, what is the probability that both students are in the College of Business Administration? (report to 3 decimal places as a proportion.)arrow_forwardIn Example 10, the team must consist of six boys and six girls. How many different 12-member teams are possible?arrow_forward
