Endosymbiont theory proposes that both mitochondria and chloroplasts were once free-living bacteria that were engulfed by ancient bacteria. The aerobic bacteria became mitochondria of the today’s eukaryotic cells while the photosynthetic cyanobacteria became chloroplasts of today’s plant cells.
