Pyrolobus fumarii is a hyperthermophile, which is rod shaped and is physiologically different from Thermoproteales. Thermoproteales is an obligate anaerobe whereas Pyrolobus fumarii is aerobic in nature. However, Pyrolobus fumarii also shows anaerobic respiration mechanism with NO3-, S0, or Fe3+ as electron acceptors and H2 as electron donor.
