To analyze:
The tangy sea air, as well as motion of water under the feet, were felt by Joni when she first stepped onto the sailboat. After sometime, Joni no longer noticed any smell but was attentive of the rolling motion of water for hours.
The types of receptors that are involved in the detection of the smell of tangy sea air and motion.
The reason for the fading smell sensation and remaining the rolling sensation.
Introduction:
Sensory receptors are either dendrite of a sensory nerve cell or a specialized cell. Every sensory receptor is activated by a particular type of alterations in the environment. The sensory receptors are categorized in different classes on the basis of microscopic structure (free nerve ending or separate cells), type of stimulus detected (mechanoreceptors, nociceptors, chemoreceptors, photoreceptors, or thermoreceptors), as well as origin of stimuli and location of receptors (exteroceptors, proprioceptors, and interoceptors).

- Figure 36.14 Cochlear implants can restore hearing in people who have a nonfunctional cochlea The implant consists of a microphone that picks up sound. A speech processor selects sounds in the range of human speech, and a transmitter converts these sounds to electrical impulses, which are then sent to the auditory nerve. Which of the following types of hearing loss would not be restored by a cochlear implant? Hearing loss resulting from absence or loss of hair cells in the organ of Corti. Hearing loss resulting from an abnormal auditory nerve. Hearing loss resulting from fracture of the cochlea. Hearing loss resulting from damage to bones of the middle ear.arrow_forwardThe volley theory of auditory information transfer is: When hair cells follow the waveform of stimulating sinusoids > 3 kHz Dependent on the organization of the basilar membrane Responsive with an AC component to low frequency tones An extraordinarily slow process Which of the following statements concerning photoreceptors is not correct ? cones produce colored images whereas rhods don't cones contain rhodopsin cones are less sensitive to light cones produce clear imagesarrow_forwardYour friend had a severe infection in the cochlea, which caused deafness. The scarring from the infection prevents movement of the basilar membrane of the organ of Corti. In response to a sound, you would predict that: The tympanic membrane would not vibrate The tympanic membrane would vibrate but the three bones in the middle ear would not move The three bones in the middle ear would move, but the cochlear fluid would not have any waves The cochlear fluid would have waves, but the hair cells would not bend The hair cells would bend, but no receptor potential would be createdarrow_forward
- The inner ear is responsible for both hearing and balance. One of the diseases affecting the inner ear is Meniere's disease. Affected individuals often experience vertigo, among other symptoms. Vertigo is a sensation that the surrounding is spinning or swaying in the absence of any body movement. Which of the following rows correctly identifies the affected structure and process in individuals experiencing vertigo? Select one: a. Structure Process Semicircular canals Rotational equilibrium b. Structure Process Semicircular canals Gravitational equilibrium c. Structure Process Organ of Corti Gravitational equilibrium d. Structure Process Organ of Corti Rotational equilibriumarrow_forwardThe fluid that fills the cochlear duct, where the organ of Corti is located, is called____________. which of the following is a proprioceotor? Meissner's corpuscule muscle spindle Ruffini's corpuscule Merkel disc pain receptor Which of the following helps to explain why stimulation of cones results in more acute vision than stimulation of rods? Cones are more sensitive to color than rods are Cones require abundant light in order to be stimulated Rods are very sensitive, and can be stimulated even in very low light, so the signals all bleed together Cones have an almost 1:1 relationship with their axon pathways back to the cortex Cones are highly concentrated in the fovea, and rods are notarrow_forwardThere are only five distinct basic tastes, but thousands of different odors. Demonstrate your understanding of the olfactory system by making a reasonable hypothesis that explains how a vast number of chemical odorants can be recognized?arrow_forward
- Which Receptor detects smell?arrow_forwardSome somatic senses are fast-adapting and others are slow-adapting. Two different types of receptors are listed below. Explain the advantage using an example, for it to be slow or fast. Then explain, using an example, for why it would be harmful if it was the opposite type. Temperature receptor for cold temperatures, fast-adapting 2.Muscle-spindle proprioceptor, slow-adaptingarrow_forwardSome student nurses are at a party. Because they love anatomy andphysiology so much, they are discussing adaptation of the special senses. They make the following observations:a. When entering a room, people easily notice an odor, such as brewingcoffee. A few minutes later, the odor might be barely detectable, ifat all, no matter how hard they try to smell it.b. When entering a room, people can detect the sound of a tickingclock. Later the sound is not noticed until people make a consciouseffort to hear it. Then the ticking is easy to hear.Explain the basis for each of these observationsarrow_forward

Where in the brain does this takes place and explain how this mechanism would enable you to localize a sound coming from your left side.arrow_forward
