Explanation

Temperature is a primary control of the highland climate of this region. Elevation, in turn, influences temperature and precipitation amounts. Therefore, the rapid decrease in temperature with increasing elevation results in a variety of microclimates within alpine regions. Exposure is also an important highland climate control. West-facing slopes receive the warm afternoon sun, whereas east-facing slopes are sunlit only in the cool of the early morning.
